Bonking Frog Wines | Geographe Wine Region

Busy Frogs make Fabulous Wine

Behind the impressive gates of Bonking Frog Wines you’ll find some of the best reds in the Geographe region.

Visit the cellar door at Bonking Frog and you’ll get you a true sense of what the wines and owners Julie and Phil are about.

All of their tipples are infused with fun, enthusiasm and soul; the perfect mix for a local boutique winery.

Julie and Phil started their journey growing grapes, which then turned into a fulltime love affair with wine.

In 2005 they entered their Merlot into a regional show to gauge the market and they haven’t looked back since.

"We considered growing many different crops, but for a variety of reasons decided on wine grapes,” Julie said.
“We chose Merlot as a variety because of its versatility – it can produce an outstanding wine on its own, but can also be used to improve and fill out many other reds. Over time we’ve also learnt that it can produce many different styles of wine, which has been an interesting journey.”

But what about the cheeky name?

“It’s more innocent than it sounds,” Julie laughs.
“The label was named for a particularly noisy frog that lives on our property. His real name is the Western Banjo Frog (aka the bonking frog), he’s only one of many frogs here but his call a loud BONK can be heard over all the others. We decided to succeed in the wine industry we needed to follow his lead and stand out from the crowd!”

For my money, I love the simplicity of Bonking Frog Wines, I’m a bit partial to the Summer Merlot, but you won’t be disappointed with a bottle of Merlot or SSB for a Summer’s evening either.

If you're looking for somewhere close to stay, Bonking Frog has the cutest self-contained cottage. Relax on your private decking with a glass of wine and enjoy the vineyard view.

One thing’s for sure, if you spend an afternoon at Bonking Frog Wines, you won't be disappointed.
