Barrecas Wines | Donnybrook
About 40km South East of Bunbury you'll find the pretty country town of Donnybrook. A town oozing with that warm, country hospitality and plenty to see, do, eat and drink, it's the ideal day trip destination. With the winter weather making us want to cosy up next to a fire and open a bottle of red you can't go past a visit to local gem Barrecas Wines. Fil and Kelly are some of the most humble, generous, kind hearted, hard working people I know, and will make you feel instantly welcome.
After a work trip to his homeland of Italy in the early 1990s, Fil discovered his intrinsic connection to working in a vineyard and growing grapes. He took his inspiration and passion back to Donnybrook and begun planting vines. Although the Barrecas Wines story is still relatively young, the family history, tradition and Italian culture runs deep in their veins, with the impact and importance of Nonno first migrating to Australia still strong in their hearts.
The result is an honest, joyful approach to wine and wine making. With many loyal patrons and fierce supporters, Barrecas keep on making fabulous and affordable wines year after year. For them it's never been about the accolades but about doing what they love - in 2009 they claimed Best Western Australian Wine for their 2008 Shiraz, the second most prestigious award in the WA Wine industry, but you'll never see the stickers on their bottles for that or any other award they win. They produce quite a few varieties, with their reds stealing the show, crowd favourite Barbera (aka 'the monster') consistently sells out.
A couple of visits to Barrecas and you'll feel part of the family - Kelly's beaming smile and warm nature will make you want to stay and chat for hours and you'll be hard pressed not to leave with at least a bottle or two. Open every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays, this small, family run business will easily steal your heart. With the love they put into everything they put their hand to, we can't wait to see what they do next!
